Don't Allow Web Developers to Pull the Wool Over Your Eyes
This is not about those hard-working, creative and technically savvy Web developers who create visually exciting and easy to use Websites.
This post is about the minority of Web developers who think they can play games with their clients without penalty. These Web developers are the exceptions – but they are not rare enough for me. They blindly assume that Web development is too technical for business professionals to understand. The consequences of working with deceptive Web developers are that you do not receive the business results your Websites should deliver and too often you pay more than you should.
My first experience with this type of Web developer was at the Web development agency I worked at before starting E-Power Marketing. My client noticed that the traffic report showed that there were many 404 Page Not Found errors. Instead of fixing the broken links to eliminate the Page Not Founds, the Webmaster removed that reporting module. I lost a great deal of respect that day for the Webmaster. It worked out because that incident motivated me to start E-Power Marketing.
A client's web developer took over six months to change the Home page title to E-Power Marketing's recommendation. The Web developer's excuse was that SEO changes "need a second go-around in order to work and that in many cases, optimization like this takes more than one try." This excuse is about as credible as "the dog ate my homework."
More than once I have found Websites with poor search visibility that have hidden content. The Web developer did this thinking it would improve search visibility. Google easily finds hidden content then penalizes the page by burying it in search results. When this was pointed out, the Web developers have usually denied there was hidden content.
I have many stories that are just as incredulous.
If your Web developer is giving you excuses that make you scratch your head, then you need to think about a new Web developer.
If you suspect you have a Web developer whom you suspect is trying to pull the wool over your eyes, I would be happy to help you sort through the details to make that determination. Please contact me, Larry Stopa, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 920.303.1244 ext 10.
I have no fondness for game players. Too much is at stake for a business if its Website is not working hard to generate business results.
