Google recently released a 10-minute video featuring Developer Programs Tech Lead Maile Ohye, which provides tips and suggestions about how to master SEO. Ohye walks through the do’s and don’ts of SEO for startup businesses and small business who are only looking to rank for a handful or search terms. The video walks viewers through basic SEO steps and shows that Google has become more transparent in providing tips on what they are looking for.

Here are the key takeaways for the video:

•Decide if you want your Website to have a “www” or non “www” domain and be sure to 301 redirect, a permanent redirect, to whichever domain you do not choose. It’s also a good idea to do some research and check the keywords listed in Webmaster tools for your site because if your domain was previously owned by spammers you won’t rank very well.

•Including analytics code on your Website is also important, whether it be Google Analytics or a different analytics provider. Startups might not be ready to use this data immediately, but start collecting this data right away so you have some historical information about your Website on hand.

•In order to create a great experience for visitors, Ohye said keeping utility, navigation and focus in mind. When your Website continues to grow, be sure you aren’t just adding more and more information on a page; breaking the information in to separate pages might be better.

•Always define your conversion. In other words, what do you want your visitors to do when they visit your Website? Some standard conversions include: sign up for a newsletter, contact the business lead, buy a product, try a product or share a service. Be sure there is a relevant conversion possible, or a call to action, on each of your Website’s pages.

•Be smart about your copy. After researching what words normal people would use to find your business or product, include the relevant keywords naturally in to your text.

•Each of your Website’s pages should have a unique topic, unique title, keywords and descriptive anchor text for every link.

•Startups often don’t get high rankings because no one knows about their product. Find a potential audience through forums, blogs or Social Media sites. Social Media Marketing is great because you can get a variety of visitors other than just visitors through search.

Ohye also listed some potential SEO pitfalls to watch out for including don’t participate in link or buying schemes to get a better ranking, don’t hire a SEO firm that guarantees results and always focus more on content over Website fanciness. This is a resourceful video for small businesses, but it is important to remember that SEO is an incredibly complex field that is always changing, so it should be left to the experts.
