StumbleUpon: Explore More - Social Media Stage

StumbleUpon is a 'discovery engine' that lets users easily explore the Web by finding and recommending content based on their interests and the interests of other StumbleUpon users that they follow. Originally founded in January 2002, StumbleUpon is an independent startup backed by founders and new investors. In October 2011, StumbleUpon reached 20 million members, and in July of the same year it reached 25 billion total stumbles. Let's take a closer look at how a brand can benefit from StumbleUpon.

Customer Interaction

StumbleUpon is not an effective platform for communicating with consumers. Following people and sharing the content that you submit into the system directly with your StumbleUpon friends is the extent of interaction that you'll find on this platform. Also, since the content that shows up is purely random, targeting customers is nearly impossible.

Brand Exposure

Unless you are willing to create a paid campaign, StumbleUpon is not the best place for actively building brand awareness. You are able to reach a targeted audience with a paid program. However, the cost is 5 cents per visit which can add up very quickly. Thus the cost may outweigh the benefits of the program for many businesses.

Although brand exposure is limited, adding a StumbleUpon badge to your Blog posts and pages on your Website will help to increase the chance of your content being stumbled. The easier it is for people to stumble your content, the greater the chance that it will be stumbled; which will ultimately increase your brand's exposure.

Website Traffic

StumbleUpon can be a very significant referrer of traffic for many Websites. The key to increasing both organic and paid traffic is submitting great content into the system whether it is a Web page, article, or Blog post. When a person Stumbles a page with great content, they are more likely to stay on that page longer and click through the different links on that page.

StumbleUpon also allows users to share links of the pages they stumble with their Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn networks. Not only will this increase your StumbleUpon traffic, but it's an opportunity to get more likes and shares on other networks, which impact your social signals to search engines.

SEO Opportunities

StumbleUpon is a great tool for SEO purposes. But again, the key is providing great content for users to stumble. Users can give pages thumbs up or thumbs down depending on if they like the content or not. The more thumbs up, shares, and stumbles your content receives, the more likely your page will appear at the top of pages in that category.

Additionally, active StumbleUpon pages can show up in search results for the brand name. For a higher ranking, be sure to include keywords and a link to your Website in your bio. Keywords will also help others find you within StumbleUpon when they conduct a search using keywords that appear in your bio.
