E-Power's SEO Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is finally starting to show its face here in Wisconsin. Just as many are beginning or preparing to spring clean their homes, E-Power is also taking the time to do some SEO housecleaning for our clients. Below are some of the regular housecleaning tasks we like to keep up on:

Clean up broken, redirected or outdated links.

By using a free tool such as Xenu Link Sleuth, you can easily see where broken and redirected links exist on your website. Clean up those links by updating or removing them altogether. Not only does cleaning up broken links across your website improve usability, it also is good for organic search engine optimization as search engines will now be able to more easily follow the links throughout the website without having to follow redirect paths or hit dead ends.

Take advantage of Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Google and Bing Webmaster Tools offer all sorts of features allowing you to see potential road blocks for the search engines. Within these tools you can see crawl errors (which will help with cleaning up broken links), find incorrect URLs that are still in the index and remove them, view any errors with your sitemap XML file plus much more. Continually correcting and handling issues found within Google and Bing Webmaster Tools on a regular basis is important. Making things easier for the search engines regarding your website will prove worth the effort.

Give your content a refresh.

Everyone eagerly awaits the first warm spring day when the windows can open and your house regains its freshness from the long winter. Your content needs the same thing. Read through your website's content. Update any outdated information, highlight new message points, review what topics your website is not covering and develop new content. Your visitors will thank you for the content refresh by staying on your website longer and viewing more pages. Not to mention the search engines will notice too!

Check if your website needs a little face lift.

Usability and time on site are important ranking factors that the search engines take into account when determining search rankings. Review the images on your website. Are they attractive to your target audience or are they dated? Do charts and graphs include recent figures? Are your executive bio photos from 10+ years ago? By keeping your website looking up-to-date, you help minimize the chances of visitors leaving your website immediately, thus improving bounce rates and time on site.

Perform SEO audit.

Review the details and progress of your search engine optimization program. Has your organic search referral traffic increased year or year? Do you have search visibility for target phrases important to your business? Are your top pages being indexed by the search engines? By reviewing the metrics and baselines put into place, you can review what areas need to be focused on in the coming months.

Do a little link building.

Taking time to do some basic link building is always a plus with organic search engine visibility. By reviewing current backlinks and making improvements where possible, you can give your website a nice boost. Not to mention the potential to increase referral traffic.

As simple as it sounds, a little housecleaning can give your organic search visibility a nice boost. Though many of these tasks should be done on an ongoing basis, Spring always feels like a good time, just like New Years, to review your efforts and start fresh. Spring is the perfect time to begin making your website's SEO strategy a top priority.
