SCAM ALERT: Don't Pay Recurring Charges for your Google My Business Listing

At a presentation at the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, E-Power’s local search marketing team provided business owners an introduction into Google My Business (i.e. it’s importance, how to submit, why it matters, etc.). During the Q+A portion of the presentation, one attendee noted that their business constantly receives calls from individuals claiming to be Google. Others in the audience chimed in, providing their own examples of interactions with the mysterious “Google” representative. Apparently, these scammers are offering Google My Business listing submissions on a monthly basis and at a monthly cost. This is a blatant scam.

To clarify, businesses need only submit their Google My Business listing ONE TIME. Once submitted, you won’t have to do it again. While many Online Marketing agencies charge a fee to list and optimize your Google My Business listing, they should nGoogle_My_Business_Graphic.jpgot be charging on a monthly basis. Now, there ARE steps that you may need to consider doing monthly or from time-to-time, such as optimizing your business description, altering your hours of operation, adding photos, responding to and monitoring reviews, etc. However, you should never have to re-submit your business to Google.

Google My Business – formerly known as Google Maps, Google Places, and Google Local – is a highly valuable Online Marketing tool for businesses. Once you submit (or claim and verify) your business, Google may show your listing at the top of organic search results if your business listing is relevant to the search query and within the location that the searcher intends.

One of the great things about Google My Business is that it’s free. According to a study from Google, 4 out of 5 consumers use search engines to find local information nearby. With nothing holding your business back from showing up in Google’s search results and gaining traffic and visibility, what are you waiting for? To check to see if your business’s listing is already on Google, or to submit your listing, please visit www.gybo.com.

Whether you are new to Google My Business or you have been listed for ages, it is important to understand the basics so your business doesn’t fall victim to such scams. Although you only have to submit your Google My Business listing once, don't forget to periodically update your information to keep it relevant for searchers.
