With the holidays, it’s been a while since our last Online Marketing Roundup Blog post. The E-Power team enjoyed a few long holiday weekends, but the Online Marketing industry didn’t take a break! Check out some of the news and updates since our last Roundup.

As of January 1, 2016, Bing Now Powers AOL’s Web, Mobile, and Tablet Search: With over 20% of searches happening on Bing.com, the addition of AOL’s search providers brings Bing to almost 30% market share.1 This brings some changes to Bing Ads, including the inclusion of the AOL Network in ad distribution, reporting, and the ‘top vs. other’ column in keyword and campaign reports. Other changes include showing AOL Network values in the Change History and AOL owned websites being included in the Website URL publisher report.

"Partnering with Bing allows us to provide great search results and capabilities, across all screens, to our global audiences, as well as providing our brands valuable business insights and intelligence,” says Tim Lemmon, Head of AOL’s Search Business. “We’re looking forward to working together with the Bing team and bringing our audience to the Bing Network."

Spotlight Videos on Instagram Become Permanent: Like Snapchat’s Live Stories, a feed that features users’ videos geared around specific events, Instagram recently rolled out permanent “Spotlight” video compilations. These are curated videos featured on the Explore tab that relate to a theme, such as Odd Animal Couple videos. Previously, Instagram only featured Spotlight videos for big events or holidays, such as Thanksgiving and New Year’s, but now users will be able to search through these videos that are featured based on Instagram’s themes.


"Instagram’s answer to Snapchat’s Live Stories isn’t just for holidays and big events any more. Internally, they’re known as Spotlight Compilations — vertical slideshows of the best videos related to a theme, like “Dynamic Duos – Odd Couple Animal Videos” or “Ramped Up – Rad Skateboarding Videos.” They appear in the Spotlight section atop the Explore tab which launched in June."

Messenger - Looking Back & Ahead: Messenger is a quick, free and easy way for people to stay connected with family and friends. Facebook made several changes to Messenger in 2015, ranging from developing its own platform and adding video calling capabilities to sending/receiving money to customization options.

While Messenger grew greatly, Facebook said it’s not done improving yet! David Marcus, VP of Messaging Products, gave readers a glimpse of what’s in ahead for Messenger in 2016. From the growth of M, Messenger’s digital virtual assistant, to providing additional products that solve problems for people, Marcus said the Messenger team is excited about the New Year and unveiling what Facebook has in store.


"The Messenger team’s mission is to make Messenger the best place to communicate with all the people and businesses in the world. I’m happy to report that we’ve made a good step in that direction, and toward the end of 2015, we crossed the milestone of 800 million people using Messenger each month. It’s a good number, but we believe we have so much more opportunity ahead of us, and these are still the early days of Messenger."

2015’s Local Search Trends: A lot has changed in the Online Marketing industry in 2015, including big changes in Local Search Marketing. Some of last year’s highlights in Local Search included Google’s continuing to change the name of their local tools, the number of and how local results are shown on Google’s search engine results pages and the increasing number of searchers looking for products and services at businesses close to their location.
